Dunlop Microforest (Buncle Place)
To be established in: 2025
The Dunlop Microforest Project is an innovative initiative aimed at combating the urban heat island effect and enhancing local biodiversity. It will also improve the canopy cover of Dunlop which currently is a mere 12% compared to the ACT Government’s target of 30% by 2045.
This project will transform an under-utilised urban space into dense, native microforest using the Miyawaki method, which ensures rapid growth. We will layer a variety of native plants to create a self-sustaining, low maintenance forest ecosystem. This approach not only accelerates carbon sequestration and provides cooling, but also restores native habitat, promotes biodiversity and offering educational opportunities for the community.
By increasing the green cover, we anticipate a reduction in local temperatures, improved air quality, and enhanced stormwater management. The microforest will also serve as a community hub, fostering social cohesion and environmental stewardship among residents. Ultimately, this project aims to create a scalable, replicable model for urban reforestation, contributing to global efforts in mitigating climate change and enhancing urban resilience.
With the community we will plant 1500 native plants into 500m2 of improved ground. Underneath the plant beds will be a sub-surface water harvesting system that will store rainwater that falls on the site.
